Pacman gobbled up by Cowboys

Posted on: April 23, 2008 8:47 pm

If there's one thing to learn about the Dallas Cowboys acquiring hot-button corner Adam "Pacman" Jones Wednesday in a trade with the Tennessee Titans for draft picks, it's this:

Making a controversial deal, brining in a troubled player, is a lot easier to swallow when the owner is the general manager.

There aren't a lot of teams that would take a chance on a player like Jones like the Cowboys did. There is too much baggage. As good a corner as Jones is -- and he's one of the best when he's on the field -- he's one mistep away from another year-long suspension. Heck, he isn't even off his year-long suspension yet, with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell expected to act on lifting his later this summer.

But Dallas can make the deal because Jerry Jones is owner and general manager. He makes the football decisions. He pays the Bills. If it blows up, it blows up on him.

There is no general manager putting a neck on the line for this move. If it doesn't work for Jerry, so what? What's he going to do, fire himself as general manager? Not happening, as much as some Cowboys fans might want it to happen.

The Cowboys will give up a fourth-round pick for Jones, which is a steal if he's truly going to be a model citizen. With Jones, the Cowboys now have as good a starting duo as their is in the league. Jones will team with starter Terence Newman and Anthony Henry to give Dallas a nice threesome.

Jones can dominate a receiver in man coverage. The Titans coaches say he allowed seven completions while playing man coverage in 2006. And he played a lot of it. That's amazing.

Jerry Jones is moving to a new stadium. He's selling expensive seats and club seats and suites. It's a lot easier to ask for the big dollar with a Super Bowl title.

Pacman will give the Cowboys a better chance to make that a reality.

If he winds up making it rain at the local strip joint and finds himself in hot water again, Jerry Jones can get angry at his general manager.

Then he'll wink at the mirror and move on.

It sure must be good to be the king.

Pacman gobbled up by Cowboys

Amazing Jerry Jones would take this chance on such a loser as Pacman -Jones.  Here is a person that cares only about ...

well only about him-self.....Will he sell a lot of jerserys...is that why Jones is doing this??

....He cant make inerceptioons if he ain't on the field...

He is one strip club visit away from another year suspension.....and man they have some good ones in Dallas!

Jerry Jones your a great business man and I repect you.....but this is just plain wrong...

Pacman gobbled up by Cowboys

I like this trade for Dallas.  We solved potentially two glaring holes in KR/CB in one fell swoop, and for next to nothing!  Yes, a 4th round pick can sometimes pan out as a star player, but think abuot how many times this turns into next year's first-to-be-cut player.  I would happily give a 4th rounder this year and next to get someone of Pacman's caliber.  It is a small price to pay to try to reach the top, and if it doesn't work out , the money and pick is barely a blip on the radar.

Dallas has a good team in place to try to keep formerly out-of-line players in line.  It "seems" to be working.  Obviously this could collapse at any time, but I remain a big fan of giving the gamechanging high-upside players a chance for so little value on the dollar, and this fits that to a "T".

For a team that's only a few pieces short of a legit possible Super Bowl run thru the watered down NFC, this deal is a no-brainer success to me...now if only the Lions could be convinced to throw in the real Roy Willy for a similar price.  Maybe they'd be willing to take our awful Roy Willy as fair trade!!  well one can dream.

Pacman gobbled up by Cowboys

According to www.profootballtalk.com, the Cowboys will essentially get their 4th rd pick back next year (from the Titans) if Pacman's suspension is not lifted. So really, what will they have have lost? If the guy plays, he's 1 of the top 10 corners in the league, & the Cowboys D is much better......if he doesn't, the draft pick comes back. Plus, he can't stay suspended forever, can he?? So when/if he does ever get allowed back into the NFL, the Cowboys own his rights. Jerry is a genious!!!

I'm still trying to figure out how this guy is a "great" cornerback.  4 career interceptions and some punt return yards don't equal hall of fame, let alone "great" player to me.  I don't even know if he was worth the 4th round pick.

He is a great cornerback in the same way that Terence Newman is.  Teams don't throw to him because he is a shut-down corner.  Those guys don't get the big numbers because you have to have the ball thrown their way.  Hard to pick off a pass that is not thrown anywhere near you.  People get too hung up on numbers.

Pacman gobbled up by Cowboys

Pacman's caliber?...uhh, he's done exactly jack-crap. The Cowboys are becoming like the Raiders of the '70s and early '80s. Of course, it worked for them...and it seems to be working for Dallas. Don't count me as a fan. These players(T.O.-mentally ill who I sometimes feel sorry for)...and Tank Johnson(quite possibly the stupidest human being on earth)...and now Pacman Jones(an idiotic, selfish thug) show that character doesn't matter if it gets in the way of winning. Will it contribute to their demise? They're certainly a play-off team, but a Super Bowl team? Why do you think Parcells left? Why do you think they gave away the play-off game to the Giants with their undisciplined play? Hey...character might matter after all.

Side note...when talking about your team, do not "use" we. "You" have absolutely nothing to do with it.

Side note...I remember Dallas fans cheering when Roy"throw the ball if you can read my name, why do I make the pro bowl if I can't play my position properly"Williams broke T.O.'s ankle. I remember telling them how ashamed I was of that moment...nothing's changed.

Pacman gobbled up by Cowboys

The talent is definitely there in Jones.  One has to wonder if he will be capable of walking the straight and narrow.  Recently other players have been reinstated within professional sports and most seem to be grateful for the second chance and taking advantage of it.  Let's just hope Pacman knows what he has to lose.  Does anyone have any comments on the fact that Pacman and Terell Owens will be teammates?
