Rhodes should be a lesson to all

Posted on: April 28, 2008 7:31 pm

The Oakland Raiders released running back Dominic Rhodes Monday, one year after signing him as a free agent.

Shocking? Not really.

Rhodes played well in the Indianapolis Colts' run to a Super Bowl two seasons ago, but this is the type of thing that happens when teams sign runners from other teams in free agency.

It doesn't work. Smart teams draft their running backs. They don't sign backs with wear and tear.

The Raiders drafted Darren McFadden Saturday with the fourth pick in the draft, helping to expedite the process of getting Rhodes out of town. They needed to release Rhodes for cap reasons., but production was the main reason. Rhodes rushed for 302 yards last season for the Raiders, missing the first four games for violating the leageu's substance-abuse program.

In addition to McFadden, the Raiders still have Justin Fargas, their leading rusher last season, LaMont Jordan, who might not be far behind Rhodes out the door, and Michael Bush as their backs.

Rhodes ran for 113 yards in the Colts' Super Bowl victory over the Chcago Bears two seasons ago, which made him some money in Oakland. As it turns out, this was corner Larry Brown all over again for the Raiders, a knee-jerk reaction to a good Super Bowl.

When will these teams learn?

Sorry...i disagree...disagree....The Raiders also had a WR name Randy Moss who during the same time they could not take advantage of his talents. If it weren't for his reputation as a Viking you might be hinting the same comments about him. Lets face it, the Raiders offensive system would have made anyone look bad...Don't forget to write new comments about Aaron Brooks, Randy Moss, Walters (How many chances did he get)? Nevertheless, Dominic Rhodes will sign with someone else with a more hearty OL and be just fine.  And the Raiders...OMG, i think after the moves they made this offseason, THEY ARE BACK.

Dominic Rhodes probably have suffered a post-Super Bowl "hangover".  I guess he let that championship and money get into his head.

yeah- i disagree, too.  but also with your disagreement.

yeah, the Raiders have had an awful offense the last couple years.  but Rhodes looked pretty solid when he played last year.  Those 300 yards they have listed as coming over 10 games.  Not really-- for the vast majority of those games he only had a couple carries.  He started the last two games of the year, the only ones he started, and rushed for over 100 for both of them.  He still looked good, and the Raiders Oline did too.

I'm really surprised he was cut before Jordan.  I figured they'd both be cut, but I thought Jordan would be first.  Oh well, Rhodes is still a quality back, no doubt about it.

well i believe he was strictly refering to the RB position with "wear and tear"........let alone the baggage he brought re:starting season on 4 game hiatus...........yes the system was/is lacking but it was KIFFIN'S first year so not sure your correct in assessment...........

Rhodes should be a lesson to all

wear and tear? come on. the guy has 625 carries in his career... compareed to 1,050 for larry johnson, whos been in the league two fewer years.

the panthers went to their only super bowl in '04, thanks in large part to the acquisition of stephen davis, who made the pro bowl that season, after 6 years and 1383 carries, in washington.
willis mcgahee had a solid year, as did jamal lewis, travis henry all have played well for their new teams, and each has far more "wear and tear" than rhodes.

the real reason rhodes wasnt a good pickup??? hes not that good! its easy to run with peyton manning on your team. every running back who plays there performs.

I agree with what Prisco said about smart teams draft their runningbacks, but do you blame the Raiders for going after Dominic Rhodes? They had a hole and they filled it. They may have overpaid him, but thats just what the Raiders do.

Bullcrap!!

For one Rhodes wasn't played when he was eligible to play until Fargas went down and he played well those two games so it was not due to production.  Larry Brown sucked and that is a big difference partner!! What pisses me off is that why we did'nt at least attempt to trade Rhodes for a late rd pick yesterday, at least get something like a DE/DT or OLB which we still need.

Not sure about this running back theory: A few names to ponder (all within the last 15 or so years)

Priest Holmes- enough said after leaving the Ravens (true he wasn't worn and torn backing up Lewis-similar to Rhodes)

Jerome Bettis-Saw a ton of carries from the jump as a Ram-pretty good career after that with the Steelers (draft day trade)

Ricky Williams-when sober and wanting to play football looked awesome in Miami compared to his Orleans days

Jamal Lewis-looked pretty good to me last year

Warrick Dunn-helped lead the way to ATL having the #1 yardage rushing offense a few years in a row (I know Vick helped those numbers)

Marshall Faulk-was a workhorse while Manning was learning through the early years- MVP of the league post Colts with the Rams

Thomas Jones-after leaving AZ was a pretty good running back with Chicago, jury still out in NYJ land.  Suprised me!

Sure there are busts, but at least these seven give hope.  Yeah, if a guy like Rhodes who has been hurt his whole career signs a big free agent deal, it makes you shake your head.
